We decided to showcase six of the area’s best general contractors, the names behind some of its most outstanding retail and commercial spaces. Our editorial team chose these companies for their countless impressive awards and their diverse portfolios.


Prodigy Construction

11106 Decimal Drive, Louisville, KY 40299

Founded in 2005, Prodigy Construction is a leading design-build expert. It is highly regarded for its stellar construction management work and operates out of its office in Louisville. The firm has also had the opportunity to work in several districts across the southeast, including Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia, North Carolina, and Maryland. Prodigy oversees everything throughout the entire process, from start to finish. The firm makes use of a highly collaborative approach and it has a stellar portfolio filled with automotive dealerships, restaurants, industrial, healthcare, and hospital projects. 

Showcased above is one of the firm’s most impressive commercial retail projects. Located in the heart of Louisville, this project was designed for Havertys Furniture. Inside, it features a traditional theme, banisters, and great overhead lighting.


Dean Builds

109 Mercer Court, Lexington, KY 40511

Founded in 2002, Dean Builds is a leading commercial and industrial firm. Its services encompass construction management, general contracting, and a stellar design-build process. The firm is licensed to work throughout Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, and West Virginia. You’ll see a diverse range of project types in its portfolio, including retail, automotive, restaurant, and education. It has also taken on several religious structures, industrial facilities, and convenience stores. 

At the firm’s helm is president David Dean. He is an alumnus of Sayre School and the Construction Management Program at Eastern Kentucky University. He first gained experience working with Gray Construction in 1994. While there, he was named the company’s Vice President of the Southeast Region in 2003. He makes sure that each of Dean Builds’ projects receives the benefit of his extensive experience and talents.


Buffalo Construction

12700 Otto Knop Drive, Louisville, KY 40299

Buffalo Construction extends its services throughout Louisville and has had the opportunity to work in some of its best commercial districts. The firm has been in business since 1997 and has secured a solid reputation for its comprehensive array of commercial services. These include new construction and extensive remodeling work. The firm is also highly regarded for its design-build processes, which lessens the challenge for clients in terms of having to look for more subcontractors and artisans. 

Showcased above is the firm’s work for the Ashley Furniture Homestore. The firm had to work with eight of the brand’s stores, with each location spanning around 3,000 to 5,000 square feet. Each project was completed within a two-week timeframe and includes an individual showroom


Calhoun Construction Services

Calhoun Construction offers an excellent array of preconstruction and construction management services. Headquartered in Louisville, the firm also specializes in the design-build process which allows it to keep its entire process in-house. The firm is personally led and overseen by its principal and president, John Hinshaw. He offers clients over two decades of experience traveling in and around the country and managing numerous construction projects. That includes everything from hundred-million-dollar sports venues to high-end apartments. Under his leadership, the company has grown to become a team of over 125 employees and has taken on over $100M worth of projects. 

Featured above is one of the firm’s best retail spaces. Completed for Lululemon, this space spans over 3,000 square feet and was finished back in 2015. On this project, the firm’s team was tasked with its metal framing, drywall, doors, frames, blocking, acoustic ceiling, and barrel ceilings.


Miranda Construction

322 E. Kentucky Street, Louisville, KY 40203

Miranda Construction has been in business since 2016 and has had the opportunity to work with some of the area’s fastest-growing companies. Since its establishment, the firm has had the opportunity to work on over 500 projects and has been featured in publications like the Inc. 5000. It is particularly noted for its great design-build packages, which allow it to keep the entire process in-house. The firm is also known for its construction management.

The featured project was designed and completed for Zappo’s Beyond Unboxed. Located in Louisville, it features a great contemporary theme and custom lighting. Some other great details include its shelving and neutral color palette.   


Congleton-Hacker Co.

3010 Sanita Road, Louisville, KY 40213

Congleton-Hacker Co. has been working in and around the business since 1961 and operates out of two offices in Lexington and Louisville. Its portfolio showcases a great range of commercial, retail, education, office, and healthcare projects. It has also worked on several historic, housing, religious, recreation, and scientific research projects. The firm’s service area extends throughout the Tri-State region. It commits itself to the highest standards.

Located in Louisville, the featured project was completed for Blue Grass Motorsports, a long-term client of the firm. The project serves as  service drop areas for Land Rover, Jaguar, and Alfa Romeo. All in all, the project spans 45,352 square feet and required the firm to work on its exterior cladding and glass.
